Cruelty-free cosmetic brands may carry their own brushes, but it’s not always easy to tell if the brushes are made from real animal hair or synthetic bristles. For a makeup brush to be listed here as 100% cruelty-free and vegan, the brand must meet ALL of the following criteria:
1. They do not test on animals during any part of production
2. They do not order materials from any third party vendor who tests on animals
3. They do not have third parties test their products on animals on their behalf
4. They do not sell their products in countries that require animal testing (i.e. mainland China)
5. They are not owned by a parent company who tests on animals
All brushes listed below are made with human or synthetic hair, never animal hair.

My personal favorites are currently MOTD Cosmetics for brushes and Real Techniques beauty complexion sponges. Drugstore brand makeup brushes are okay, but I find that my makeup stays on much longer and applies way smoother with more high-end brushes. You really can’t beat Real Techniques’ complexion sponges though. You can get four of them for under $20.
